Returning to the Light: A Summer Solstice Blessing

The wheel continues to turn and we find ourselves once again standing in the fullness of the sun. The Summer Solstice, known as Litha or Midsummer in some traditions, is the longest day and the shortest night of the year: a sacred gateway where light reigns supreme.

As always, this is not just an astronomical event... It is an invitation.

The Solstice calls us to pause and honour the ripeness of the season and of our own becoming. It is a time to gather, to celebrate, to witness the radiant power of the Earth in bloom.

Each year, the sun climbs higher and higher until it pauses and appears to be suspended in golden stillness. This moment is the peak of solar power, a sacred pause in the Wheel of the Year, and an invitation to come home to your own radiance.

What is the Summer Solstice?

The word solstice comes from the Latin solstitium, meaning “sun standing still.” On this day—around June 20 or 21 in the Northern Hemisphere—the sun appears to stop in its journey across the sky before slowly beginning its descent.

This is a time of great potency in the natural world. Crops ripen. Flowers are in full bloom. Bees hum with devotion. The Earth is alive, vibrant and generous.

In many ancient cultures, this turning of the Wheel was honoured with bonfires, feasts, flower garlands, and offerings to the sun. It was a time of joy, community, and connection to the rhythms of life itself.

The Spiritual Meaning of the Summer Solstice

Beyond its seasonal beauty, the Solstice holds deep spiritual significance.

We are asked:

  •  What is coming into fullness within me?
  •  What am I ready to celebrate, share, or shine light on?
  •  Where am I being asked to slow down and receive?

The Solstice reminds us of the natural balance of nature—for just as the light reaches its peak, the darkness also begins to return. There is sacred rhythm in this, a cyclical dance that reflects the seasons of our own lives: blooming, harvesting, resting, beginning again.

It teaches us to savour what is, even as we prepare to gently let go in the autumn.

How I Experience the Solstice

For me, the Solstice always feels like a race. I often find myself needing to take a pause, be barefoot in the garden, hands in the soil, head tilted toward the sun... I feel called to simplify, to soften, to sit with the sweetness of the now more as the summer energy naturally makes us want to do more, so savouring is always at the top of my list of things to do.

I don’t always celebrate with grandeur or specific practices… Sometimes the most powerful ritual is to simply be—to witness the way the light pours through the trees, the way my child laughs in the warmth of the sun, the way the Earth teaches without words.

It’s also a time I reflect on what’s flourishing in my life… and what is quietly beginning to fade. As summer is the peak of the year we now begin to descend slowly into the darkness once more.

Summer Solstice Rituals and Practices

You don’t need much to honour the Solstice. The Earth is already bursting with celebration, but if you feel called, here are a few ways to mark this sacred day:

  • Rise with the sun – Greet the morning light with gratitude. Journal, meditate, or simply sit in silence as the day begins.
  • Create a flower crown or mandala – Use wildflowers, herbs, and leaves. Let it represent your blossoming self.
  • Light a candle or bonfire – Speak aloud what you’re celebrating, what you’re releasing, and what you’re inviting in.
  • Make a seasonal feast – Think berries, fresh greens, herbal teas, bright fruits. Let your meal be an offering to your one sacred life.
  • Sit in ceremony – Alone or with loved ones. Share reflections. Dance. Breathe in the beauty of this seasonal portal.
  • Rest – Let the light nourish you from the inside out. You don’t have to do more to be more. You already are.

A Gentle Note from the Wild

In the buzzing gardens and golden meadows, bees hum their songs of devotion. Trees stretch tall. Flowers open wide. Everything in nature knows what to do.

You are nature, so… You do too.

Even if you don’t have it all figured out. Even if you’re tired or tender. Even if your light feels dim. You belong in the turning of the Wheel. You are part of this dance.

Let this Solstice be a balm, a breath, a blessing.

Return to the light. And let it remind you of your own.

The Heart of the Solstice

At the Summer Solstice, we are held in a liminal space between fullness and the first whispers of descent. From here, the days will begin to shorten once more. And so, like the petals of a flower wide open to the sun, we are invited to open ourselves fully—to joy, to presence, to divine trust.

There is medicine in this moment:

  •  The sun teaches us how to shine without apology.
  •  The earth teaches us how to hold and grow what we’ve planted.
  •  The season teaches us how to savour the now, before it shifts again.
